		<description>Loop is a hydration system that uses returnable bicycle systems as inspiration. It is located in train-stations where members swipe their keyring and recieve a bottle full of freshly filtered chilled water. The user then returns the bottle into the dispenser after use. The bottle is then washed in the dispenser and ready to be dispursed again. With the elements of convinience, routine hydration and ecology ‘loop’ allows users to simply carry on.

The element of ecology is integrated in the design and interaction. Members graduate through various colours depending on how many bottles they individually put through the system. When the member scans their keyring on the dispenser the dispenser's viewport then lights up to the colour in which the member is on. This creates status for the user and also creates intrigue to bystanders.

Bottle prototype :
I decided to market my system at the young professional, this assisted in driving the design decisions. The bottle is CNC lathed from stainless-steel and is fully functional. The form of the bottle is simple and elegant. The cap gradually tapers out to allow it to be easily removed, it is also a plug cap because I wanted to have connotations towards alcohol; which arguably creates signs of sophistication.

Dispenser scale model (1:10) :
The dispenser scale model was made out of wood which was spray painted, 3D printed details and lazer-cut acrylic windows (the functional full scale product would be made from stainless steel). The form was driven from the idea of a cycle with the person completing it at the receiving and disposing points. The form is bold, controlled and suits the environment of the modern European train station. It would be placed in the centre of the train station to allow people to flow around both sides.

Rest is a product created in my final year at University. The brief was to create a manifesto about design. My manifesto was that designers need to take humans into account a lot more than they do and not phase them out of the products due to other factors creeping in. I was also trying to eliminate any pre-conceptions of what a product should be. This was broadcast strongly through 'rest' due to it's scale and form being associated with a that of a stool, yet the interaction being completely different and unique.

Rest is a new way for people to relax their head and neck. It allows the user to physically and mentally rest their head. This is due to the intent of the position and the lack of surroundings while only being able to look at the ground.
This product is to encourage human interaction in design by simply taking a problem and solving without any pre-conceived ideas of what the design should be. Rest helps the user shut out the world and relax.

Materials: Powder coated steel, Wood (Ash), Canvas, Leather

Processes: Lazer cutting, hand bending and manual lathing.

'Clip' is my piece from a furniture paper that was separated into two stages. The first stage was the concept generation which had to be completed with a 1:5 scale model and a full scale detail. The second stage was refining the design and producing a full scale final prototype. 

'Clip' is a table that is inspired by vines. Specifically the way they cling to a host structure. This is emulated by two distinct materials joining at the corner with the stainless steel legs representing the vines and the table top representing the host. The legs are able to be clipped on and off allowing it to be flat packed and also giving users the ability to store it away. The minimal materials and design fit the contemporary cafe and home of limited space today. The wood used is Accoya which is ecologically treated pine and allows 'Clip' the ability to be set outside and and also reduces the carbon footprint.

When I revisited the design after stage 1 I made all decisions based on one philosophy - simplify. I decided to strip the form right down to the function and create a simple mechanism that would hold the legs by friction. The friction (clip) is caused by the clip (connected to the table top) being wider than the two points on the leg. Therefore it pries the leg apart enough to make the table stable but not too much that it is hard to unclip.

Stage 1 preliminary hand in: Concept and 1:5 scale model
At the end of stage one I had provided the base to lead into stage 2. What I was heavily focusing on was the two materials working together. The cones on the corner of the table top were to signify the blending from one material to the other. I had not fully worked out the function of the clipping mechanism at this point but provided a strong concept leading into the next stage.

Quakescape is a 3D fabricator that works by taking earthquake data from the site GeoNet (www.geonet.org.nz) and transferring it into the medium of art by using paint and Arduino technology. Quakescape creates a transformation of data that is often seen as negative and changes it into a completely different medium that is artistic, physical and uttely unique. The surface that the paint is extruded onto is a CNC routed landscape section of Christchurch. This acts as the blank canvas and allows the paint to move around the landscape creating amazing colourful visuals. The colours represent the magnitude of the earthquakes. The fabricator is run on two horizontal axis by stepper motors powered by G-code generated through Arduino. This allows the nozzle head to be moved to the precise location of the earthquake. Once location is determined paint is then pumped from the containers through the tubes and extruded out the nozzle. This is the moment where precise magnitudinal data gets transferred into an artform.

Quakescape was a project I was involved in during my final year of University. It was originally the concept of Josh Newsome-White to take earthquake data and convert it into a visual representation. 

My contribution to the group involved overseeing different jobs. I also produced the idea of using paint as the material therefore creating a clear link to it being perceived as a piece of art. I had a large part in the construction and manufacturing of the physical object. I also taught myself how to construct and code arduino to make the piece function.

 Exposed was designed in my final year of University. The brief was to design and make a hand-held electronic device using previously used electrical components. This project was heavily directed towards CAD (computer aided design) and CAM (computer aided manufacturing).

Electronics that are sold today look like something that robots have constructed and probably have. As I discovered not all current electronics fit that category.

Using a contrasting clean modern-retro aesthetic ʻExposedʼ (a transistor radio) celebrates the not so beautiful electronics. The product expresses this by lighting up internally when activated, allowing the user to view the spectacle through the glass viewport. 'Exposed' supports surprise design not only by being able to see the electrical components but also by the location of the speaker at the back of the product.
Processes used were 3D printing, lazer-cutting and CNC Lathe manufacturing.

Accentuating Form
Accentuating form is a project from my first year of University. The paper was photography and the brief was to explore light.

The 'Accentuating Form' set of images uses linear shadows to express the contours of the human body. It shows that the human body is a free flowing form that blends together seamlessly. The images portray a poetic element that relates to our emotions as humans and is coherent to the form it is expressing.

		<description> Below are two projects from my second year at University. The paper was based around design physiology and the human body. 

Project 1: Using sea anemones as a precedent and 3D printing as my method. I have designed a conceptual version of human eye protection. One will have the ability to open and close their tentacles through the nervous system.They are used to prevent dust or any other interferences. 3D printed materials are resin and rubber. all materials were dyed in tea.

 Project 2: I have recreating the wrist joint in a abstract form by using 3D printing and wire. All the movements and movement restrictions are the same as a real human wrist. This was found through experimentation with the 3D printed resin material, measuring the flexibility and rigidity.
The colours were created by dying parts of the resin and are to show the user that it is not only a sculptural piece but also to be interacted with.

Chaise Portrait was completed in my second year of University. The brief was to design and create a chaise. It was broken into two parts. Stage 1 was individual and we were required to produce a concept and a 1:5 physical model. Stage 2 was a team project where projects were selected from stage 1 to be crafted into full scale prototypes as well as 1:5 scale models. My project from stage 1 was selected. 

Stage 1 : Individual Project  and Initial Concept 'Chaise Portrait' creates a self-portrait of the user. It is a chair that comes alive when in use and makes the user become noticed. When not in use it sits alone as a framed piece that arises questions about purpose. 

What I initially created was a piece that was to be perceived as abstract art at first glance but once the ergonomic grooves were seen by the viewer I wanted this to initiate the interaction. Touching or physically interacting with art is often seen as 'taboo', Chaise Portrait was pushing this to the extreme that the user went from viewing to actually being the piece of art.

Stage 2 : Selection and group development  The style of the chaise was changed dramatically. It was changed to an elegant style and was adapted to a simple black and white contrast. It was also changed to two pieces; this was to relate the aesthetic towards a traditional renaissance chaise shape.

Group: James Boock, Philippa Shipley, Hannah Warren, Maxfield Holz, Kohen Judd and Brenna McGuinness.

My role within the group was to be creative director. I made a lot of final decisions at the discretion of the group and everything went through me. There was a lot of management involved with regards to delegating but I thoroughly enjoyed it and from all accounts the group did too.

The ergonomic grooves in the chaise create a subtle hint of the intended use, implying that it is a chaise.

There was also a scale model made, this was to show the frame in relation to the chaise and also to show that the user steps onto the frame and 'into' the portrait.

Process: 
The chaise was made by 3D modeling in SolidWorks, then transferred to a STL file and made from wood using a CNC router. It is held up by brackets that penetrate the wall and hold the chaise up, so they are non-existant to the viewer. This gives the design a touch of mystery.

Strand lamp was created in my second year at University. The brief was to create a lamp.

'Strand lamp' is a pendant lamp made out of spring steel with copper attributes. It is designed to provide a unique contrast when it is turned on revealing a beautiful form of ambient light. It is extremely interactive in the sense that the user has to clip the bottom to the top for the light to turn on - a very deliberate motion. Strand lamp uses sturdy and industrial materials such as spring steel and copper which cannot be more apparent than in the clip at the bottom. These materials and aesthetic provide just what is needed for the contrast when the lamp is turned on.

When turned off it is read as a completely different object. It is quite innocuous in the way it hangs, this makes it all the more interesting.

The copper detailing finishes the product off well, providing a contrast on the black as well as being honest to the theme of the copper clip by having the material appear throughout the object
